Our Story

My name is Elly. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in June 2013.

Around April 2013 when I was 19, I began losing huge amounts of weight, drinking ridiculous amounts of water, using the bathroom constantly, and feeling fatigued all the time. Looking back, if I had known anything about diabetes then, I would've gone straight to a doctor. But I didn't, so I'd like to share my story and spread some awareness about Type 1 Diabetes.
I hadn’t been feeling very well for a couple of days and had gone to the doctor expecting to be told I simply needed rest and water. While waiting for my blood results, the cramping in my stomach worsened and I couldn't stop vomiting. I called my mum to come and pick me up; she took one look at me and took me straight to the Emergency Department. Endless blood tests later, it was confirmed that I had Type 1 Diabetes.  I don't remember much of the next few days spent in ICU on a drip, but that entire week was spent trying to learn as much as I could about carb counting, blood sugar levels, and insulin.
It took about 12 months for me to come to terms with what I had. I was injecting insulin 5 times a day and learning that my eating habits had to be changed for my long term health.
During this time, my mum and I searched high and low for recipes and meals that would help me (and other diabetics) manage their carbohydrate and sugar intake with as little stress as possible. Neither of us had been particularly good cooks, although we had both very quickly become very interested in nutritional panels! We talked about why this was so difficult and what we could do to help ourselves, and thus Diabetic Food Online was born - now rebranded Diabetes Meals Online.

We are now the proud owners of a business that helps people with like me manage their meal time more easily. (In my spare time I make and sell home made bath bombs in my business Naked Truths).
